Images of God: A Day of Color, Texture, and Sacred Imagination

What a lovely "Images of God" Art Workshop with Anna Schmunk this past Saturday! We were both all smiles as it was the first time we'd met in-person after almost two years in our School of Spiritual Direction together!

She created such a welcoming atmosphere at Day 7 in Nashville with different sizes of paper, tempra paint, watercolor, watercolor pencils, and various brushes, along with a zine, schedule, sticker, snacks, and music.

We were invited into three "make sessions" as our images of God danced with color, texture, shape, and space. She read a reflection from Black Liturgies: Prayers, Poems, and Meditations for Staying Human by Cole Arthur Riley, which awakened our artistic hearts to each time of creating, reflecting, journaling, and sharing.

A sample of questions of her own that Anna offered along the way:

  •  When you think about God, what textures come up for you?
  • What does God feel like?
  • Is God smooth like the surface of an egg or a new piece of paper?
  • Is God cozy and soft, like a favorite well-worn sweater?
  • Does God have sharp edges?
  • Is God rough, like asphalt or concrete?

This workshop was part of Anna's Year Two integrative project, and we all appreciated how she brought her spiritual director's heart to the process of being both a wise facilitator and a compassionate witness, offering instruction and then observations. She noticed how our little group chose similar colors and drew similar shapes, even made similar motions when we created, even though each piece looked different...fascinating!

It was a day that offered childlike freedom to create, bringing with it surprise and healing insights that I am still being nourished by. Thanks so much, Anna!

She's considering offering an online version this fall. We'll keep you posted!
