How do you pray when the weight of the world feels so heavy?

During an Alumni Coffee Hour with WTC- a space where those of us who have completed the program gather to reconnect- Kasey Hitt asked a simple, but powerful question: “How do you pray when the weight of the world feels so heavy?”

I had to pause and consider. But then an honest answer dawned on me. Lately, I noticed that I have been praying quicker, shorter thank you prayers. Thank you for the blue sky and sunshine. Thank you for my blessings. But, aside from the Centering Prayer practice, I haven’t been praying very deeply. Her words made me realize why: the world did feel heavy. I’d been carrying the weight more than I even realized.

Kasey shared something she had written on social media, which opened up a new way of imagining prayer:

“How do you pray when the weight of the world is overwhelming? Feeling down and at a loss for words, I took a bottle of bubbles outside and blew a prayer for each person and situation weighing on my heart, watching what felt heavy float up into the sky.

Later on, I thought that maybe those I’d prayed for could feel a little lighter for a moment, too, so next time I took a few photos. Hopefully, the texts of these playful prayers can bring a little joy to some of those whose names have been blown into bubbles.

I share this in case others are needing a lighter way to pray. If you already have a rhythm of prayer, maybe you try the Liturgy of the Hours with bubbles. Imagine your neighborhood or parking lot at work filled with bubble prayers!

May we not discount the small, simple things.”

How might you take a small step to unburden your soul if you feel overwhelmed? A talk with a trusted friend? Asking for a hug from someone you love? Writing? Painting? Liturgy of the Hours with bubbles?

Whatever your soul needs in this season, it doesn’t have to be complicated or polished to be holy. Sometimes the most faithful prayer is simply the one we can offer, and grace meets us exactly where we are.
