A Lighter Way Week 13: "When Life is Life-ing: Finding Stillness in the Storm"
Aug 15, 2026One of my favorite questions from spiritual direction is, “What does the inner landscape of your life look like right now?”
For me right now, that landscape is often a storm. Sometimes it’s high winds and lightning; other times, smaller waves that still rock the boat. The last 18 months have been full-on stormy, or as I tell my friends, life has been life-ing.
I know I’m not alone. Everywhere I look, people are going through it with job shifts, sick family, hard decisions, loss, and the weight of a divided world. It feels like just as the waters settle, another wave knocks us sideways.
Exhausted and ready for relief, I brought my stormy self into the silence and asked, “What could my inner landscape look like if the sea was calmed?”
In my mind’s eye, I was transported back to a place from childhood trips to my grandparents in Florida: "The Point." It’s a spot jutting out into the Gulf where I used to sit on a bench, listening to the palm trees rustle over the calm waters and feeling the joy of being with family.
“The Point” was my place of peace. Resting on that bench once again in the stillness, two words met me: Be still. And in that stillness I felt the waters calm, my breaths got deeper, and Love surrounded me.
When the waves around you feel overwhelming, what or where is "The Point" for you?
Practice
How would you describe your current inner landscape? Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. What do you see? How does your body feel?
Now, invite the Divine to sit in that landscape with you. Invite peace to sit with you. Does the landscape change?
Be still and soak in the calm of your inner peace place.
Blessing
May you find peace today.
Even amidst the storms of life, may you take a minute to breathe in and out and feel the stillness.
May you find the place where the water calms, the body relaxes, and you can be still.
