Get ready for St. Lucia Day (December 13)
Dec 07, 2025I’m about 10 years old, paging through a library book called something like Christmas Around the World, the world being arranged alphabetically for ease of reference. Poland, Russia, Spain… Sweden! Look at THIS! Saint Lucia Day?
Girls in long white dresses and red sashes and evergreen wreaths of flaming candles on their heads! In my picture, there was a girl thus arrayed, singing as she brought coffee and pastries to her family. To a child given to theatrics, this was a summons. What a shock to my groggy parents when I barged into their bedroom before dawn in a white sheet cinched with red athletic socks, blazing birthday candles taped to a plastic wreath on my head, bearing a tray of ersatz coffee and Bisquick buns, and singing Joy to the World with all my heart.
