A Lighter Way Week Six: The Sea of New Beginnings
Jun 28, 2026The Sea of New Beginnings
Reflection:
John Phillip Newell, author and former priest with the Church of Scotland, led my group of pilgrims to the top of a grassy hill on an unusually sunny day. We were on the Isle of Iona, Scotland, facing a rocky beach recognized as the place where St. Columba of Ireland came ashore in 563 AD to spread the message of Christ. This narrow beach, flanked by rocky cliffs, is known as the Sea of New Beginnings.
Newell invited us into a contemplative spirit as we descended onto the beach, strewn with tide-worn rocks of assorted sizes and colors. Our mission was to comb through the deep piles of stones looking for one rock to toss into the ocean. It represented a hardship we were to release and let go ceremoniously. Then he asked that we choose another stone, a symbol of unfolding grace, to take home.

Practice:
Pause during the week to seek out new beginnings, whether collecting seashells at the beach or taking the first sip of your morning coffee. Notice how these moments of beginning shape your outlook. Gauge the degree of presence you bring to the smallest moments as you begin each new day.
Blessing:
May the richness of each moment give you the strength to release what feels insurmountable.
May you embrace the grace of new beginnings, moving in rhythm with the seasons of your life and the sacred unfolding of your days.
This sixth reflection comes from Maria Savage, Graduate of WTC's School of Spiritual Direction.
